DVD/Video
Valentino fans are ultra fortunate, not only do many of
Valentino's major films survive, many have made it onto video or DVD format.
As everyone with an interest in Valentino knows, 2006 has been a banner year
with five new Valentino films making a debut on television and now soon to
be on DVD.
Films of Rudolph Valentino
-
All Night (1918) - released on DVD-R by
Grapevine Video. The film is mastered from the only known surviving
source print. Valentino and Carmel Myers are charming in this film.
-
Beyond the Rocks (1922) - released by
Milestone Film & Video on DVD in July 2006. Coupled with A Delicious Little
Devil (1919) and several bonus features including Extensive Stills Gallery
from Gloria Swanson's personal collection, 85-minute wire recording of
Gloria Swanson from 1955 as well as interviews, articles, and videos
detailing the restoration process.
-
Blood and Sand (1922) - released by KINO on
DVD. Bonus features also includes Valentino Funeral Newsreel footage,
etc.
-
Camille (1921) - released by Warner Home
Video as a bonus feature on the DVD issue of the 1937 Greta Garbo version of
Camille. Scored by Peter Vantine, the print quality is
excellent.
-
Cobra (1925) - released by Image
Entertainment on DVD. DVD is now out of print and quite a rarity to
find.
-
A Delicious Little Devil (1919) - released
by Milestone Film and Video on DVD in July 2006. Coupled with Beyond
the Rocks (1922) and several bonus features including Extensive Stills
Gallery from Gloria Swanson's personal collection, 85-minute wire recording
of Gloria Swanson from 1955 as well as interviews, articles, and videos
detailing the restoration process.
-
The Eagle (1925) - released by Image
Entertainment on DVD. Print is from the Paul Killiam collection and is
not the best transfer or print extant. I'm waiting and hoping for the
Photoplay Productions restored print to make it onto DVD.
-
The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (1921)
- released by Delta Entertainment on DVD as a bonus feature appended to the
documentary The Great Lover. Mastered from a 16mm print, be
warned the print is murky and dark. Best to wait and hope that Time
Warner sees fit to release the Photoplay Productions restoration on DVD,
it's worth waiting for.
-
The Married Virgin (1918) - released by
Image Entertainment on DVD. This is the earliest feature to offer
Valentino a starring role and he relishes it!
-
Moran of the Lady Letty (1921) - released by Flicker Alley in the fall of 2006. This disc will also
feature the restored fragments of The Young Rajah (1923) and
Stolen Moments (1920)
-
The Sheik (1921) - released by Image
Entertainment on DVD. This version is far superior to the Paramount
VHS release, a beautiful 35mm toned print source finally illustrates what
all the fuss was about the Sheik. Paired with The Son of the Sheik,
Rudolph Valentino and His 88 American Beauties and the Valentino
Funeral newsreel, this disc is chock full of good stuff.
-

Flicker Alley in the fall of 2006. This disc will also feature the
restored fragments of The Young Rajah (1923) and Moran of the Lady
Letty (1921).
