In June 2010 I was absolutely thrilled to publish Rudolph Valentino the Silent Idol - His Life in Photographs using blurb.com. This book was a dream project for me, one that had a very long gestation. The book interior was full color. Because of the self-publishing model, it was limited by the number of pages (pricing was counted every 20 pages ). I was very conscious of wanting to keep this book affordable. That said, I also wanted it to be positively crammed with fantastic photographs.
Due to the lengthy time it took me to get the book finished (this was a good thing in some ways, the last new photo was added 2 days before final submission), the book was pricier than I wanted. The images were cramped and smaller than I would have liked. Even with these caveats, I was happy with the final product. Happily, the book far outsold my expectations with absolutely incredible feedback. I'd be lying if I did not say this was most gratifying. This was the result of hard work and a labor of love.
Since that first day I pushed the button to publish , I have ached to recreate this book. I wanted a larger canvas and show off the photos as they are meant to be seen, full size or close to it. With the vast improvements and ease to utilize the self-publishing model, one thing has not improved, the ability to handle a large scale coffee table book in a cost-effective manner. I did consider using a kickstarter campaign to do this, but, I did not think the sales would warrant the production costs needed up front. I did not want hundreds of copies of this book stored in my apartment. I had to be realistic, not everyone who has purchased the original edition book would buy it again.
The goal for the new edition was to republish in English and also in an Italian translation. If possible, a kindle edition would also be on the table. This has led me to utilize a more standardized format for the manuscript. Less showy than the original edition. With the increase in size and number of photographs this will be an improvement on the original. It will also be more affordable than the original blurb edition.
The original blurb edition can be had in softcover and hardback/imagewrap.
The new expanded edition is now available direct at the publisher site (other channels coming soon)
